We are pleased to announce the next phase of E-Prescribing with the upcoming go-live of Electronic Prescribing of Controlled Substances for residents and fellows in January 2020.
All residents and fellows will be contacted shortly by their Graduate Medical Education program manager regarding the EPCS registration process that begins on Monday, Jan. 6, 2020.
This is part of a comprehensive effort to fully implement EPCS at all Beaumont hospitals and ambulatory offices.
What is the benefit?
EPCS is heavily regulated by the federal government and requires an additional ‘Technology Authentication Device’ to validate the providers identity when signing for controlled substance medication orders in Epic. This is called two-factor authentication. This method will be a ‘Soft Token’ technology, which essentially is an app on your smart phone that serves as the additional authentication.
There are numerous benefits with EPCS. It not only makes ordering controlled substances easy for physicians, but it makes our patients lives easier as well. This streamlined ordering process cuts back on paperwork, makes controlled substance prescribing safer and reduces wait times for our patients and their families.
How to register
Residents and fellows are asked to report to their GME program managers starting on Monday, Jan. 6 for registration on the EPCS system.
- Bring one of these four forms of photo identification with you:
- driver’s license
- passport
- Beaumont Hospital ID badge
- military ID
- Download and install the ImprivataID application on your smart phone.

The GME program managers will also provide instructions on how to use the features and functions for EPCS.
