We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Frank Shannon as interim chief of the Section of Cardiovascular Surgery at Beaumont, Royal Oak.
Dr. Shannon has been a mainstay of the Cardiac Surgery team at Beaumont, Royal Oak for 30 years. Cardiovascular surgical techniques have evolved steadily during those years, and he has been at the forefront of our movement toward complex multi-valvular procedures and minimally invasive valve surgery, including the TAVR and the collaboration it requires. Dr. Shannon has gained a reputation as a cardiac surgeon willing to take on the highest risk patients for whom other treatments have been exhausted.
Perhaps less well recognized is the sense of responsibility with which he has approached these difficult cases. Dr. Shannon has worked away from the operating room to enhance patient well-being through the Phase of Care Mortality Analysis, an analytic tool he invented. POCMA is now employed by governing professional societies in Michigan and the U.S., as well as internationally, to track and enhance patient outcomes.
Dr. Shannon, in partnership with leadership of cardiovascular medicine and the health system, is committed to sustaining the tradition of excellence in cardiovascular surgery and enhance and grow the program that has been built over many years. Active recruitment efforts are ongoing with outstanding surgeons poised to join our team, including Dr. Frank Fazzalari, newly onboarded.
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Shannon!
