Andrew Thompson, M.D., a radiation oncology resident at Beaumont, Royal Oak, received a $30,000 grant from the Radiological Society of North America to support his research initiatives. He is using artificial intelligence and deep learning to help improve radiation treatment for cancer patients. Potential benefits from his research include: more accurate tumor targeting, more efficient radiation treatment planning and fewer radiation side effects. The goal is to develop a smart program capable of understanding millimeter-scale changes in patient anatomy from day-to-day, allowing doctors to more effectively and safely treat cancer with radiation.
