Beaumont, Royal Oak physician George Williams, M.D. has been named 2019 president of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the largest groups of eye physicians and surgeons in the world.
The Academy serves as the primary organization for professional education and patient centered advocacy in this specialty.
“As president, I will have the privilege of leading the board of trustees selected from around the U.S., as well as the world, to form policy and try to advance our mission of protecting sight and empowering lives,” Dr. Williams said.
He added that in this role, he will be a facilitator, responsible for orchestrating the goals of the academy’s members. His areas of expertise include health policy, patient safety and patient advocacy, so they align well with the mission and goals of the organization.
“Every physician realizes the role we have in providing care. In that role, we can take care of one patient at a time. When one is active in national organizations, though, we can influence policy that can affect tens of thousands. It’s a special opportunity.”
Congratulations to Dr. Williams on this national appointment.
