Beaumont is dedicated to helping with physician burnout and professionalism issues

As a physician, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed with your practice, your schedule or your life. When this happens, physicians tend to become less productive, engaged and satisfied with the work they do. This is the definition of physician burnout – which can lead to professionalism issues. To combat this problem, Beaumont is adapting a new approach to professionalism.

This month, physician leaders attended a national leadership forum at Vanderbilt that addressed how to effectively engage physicians who need assistance. Next month, the eight medical directors of professionalism will travel to Vanderbilt to complete a 10-hour intensive training on how to help increase self-awareness in physicians.

Later this year, the Vanderbilt team will come to Michigan and hold a four-hour training session for professionalism and service excellence leads.

According to Peggy Nowak, M.D., president of Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak medical staff and executive director of Physician Wellness, “After all the training is complete, physician practices that have a higher number of patient complaints will be given information from the service excellence leads who can help them slow things down.”

She added, “Identifying these problems early is what can make all the difference. This will allow all of us to become happier, and possibly more productive in the work we do.”
