Recognizing excellence: Medical residents

Recently, General Surgery residents represented Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak at the Michigan Chapter of American College of Surgeons’ 65th annual meeting, with eight abstracts accepted for presentation. Beaumont, Royal Oak’s General Surgery residency program includes a year dedicated to research. Fourth-year surgical residents enhance their critical thinking skills and learn how to evaluate the clinical literature through a year of research activities. Each resident develops and leads up to four research studies and presents their results at regional and national surgical society meetings. Natalie Luehmann, M.D., a fourth-year general surgery resident, was awarded the Farouk N. Obeid Clinical Trauma Award at the MCACS meeting for her study, “Implementation of a Pediatric Trauma Cervical Spine Clearance Pathway.” Samer Kawak, M.D., a third-year general surgery resident, was awarded first place in the Resident Quick Shot competition for his presentation, “Rectal Cancer Biomarkers as Predictors of Response to Neoadjuvant Therapy.”
