Apply today for the Beaumont Physician Leadership Academy -- Deadline Monday, Nov. 5

Beaumont is proud of its dedication to preparing physicians to provide leadership in the future. The Beaumont Physician Leadership Academy is designed to provide physicians the necessary collaborative leadership skills and critical thinking that medical schools do not. The program ensures Beaumont doctors lead in high-value health care, focusing on extraordinary outcomes through education, innovation and compassion.

Physician leaders and graduates of the program have described it as “invaluable,” a “significant opportunity” and “an excellent experience.

BPLA consists of a nine-month curriculum of educational sessions with an initial weekend session followed by one weeknight session that occurs monthly. Group project work and executive mentoring are also part of the BPLA experience. Classes are held in a centralized location—most recently at Beaumont, Farmington Hills’ Colen Auditorium.

The program is sponsored by senior vice president of Beaumont Physician Partners, David Walters, D.O. It is his shared goal with BPLA to have each year’s class represent Beaumont physicians across the network.

“BPLA is free of charge and open to all Beaumont physicians as we strive to make each year’s class as inclusive and diverse as possible, representing each of the eight Beaumont medical staffs.” Dr. Walters said.

Daniel Frattarelli, M.D. is the president of Beaumont Medical Group and a graduate of BPLA. He enrolled in the program to learn more about hospital administration but found that the relationships developed throughout proved to be the most valuable. After listening to a presentation from former Oakwood Healthcare CFO Doug Welday, Dr. Frattarelli was able to call and ask questions.

“He gave me a ton of information,“ Dr. Frattarelli said. “I would not have had that sort of access without this class.”

Nick Gilpin, D.O. is the chief medical officer of Beaumont Hospital, Grosse Pointe and a BPLA graduate. He too wanted to learn about hospital administration and found the relationships formed during the academy to be priceless.

“BPLA was an excellent experience which gave me an opportunity to go behind the curtain and see the more operational side of a large health care system,” Dr. Gilpin said. “It also provided a significant opportunity to network with many of my peers and other physician leaders from across the system.”

Physicians are lifelong learners, and BPLA lays a strong foundation of leadership ability for physicians at any stage of their careers.

Caroline Henein, D.O. is the chief of Radiology at Beaumont Hospital, Trenton. She believes the best time for physicians to apply is after being in practice for a few years.

While many graduates found different aspects of BPLA to prove most valuable, all agree the academy provides the education, relationships and critical thinking to become a leader in health care, and they have some advice for aspiring leaders.

“First, be excellent physicians,” Muzammil Ahmed, M.D., chief of staff at Beaumont Hospital, Wayne and a BPLA graduate, said. “Do a realistic assessment of your interests and strengths, find a mentor or two and keep slugging away.”

“Get out of your office and talk to people,” Dr. Gilpin said. “Building solid relationships within your organization is a huge key to be a successful leader.”
